Walk into any electronics store and you will see RFID blocking wallets, NFC protection pouches, and signs warning about wireless skimming. Three terms, often used interchangeably, often incorrectly. Here is what they actually mean and which one matters for what you carry.
RFID is the umbrella term
RFID, Radio-Frequency Identification, is a category of technology that uses radio waves to identify objects. It covers a wide range of frequencies and protocols, from low-frequency animal microchips to high-frequency contactless payment cards to ultra-high-frequency warehouse inventory tags.
If you are carrying a card and a reader can talk to it without touching it, that interaction is RFID at the broadest level. RFID is not a single thing. It is a family.
NFC is one specific subset of RFID
NFC, Near-Field Communication, is a specific subset of high-frequency RFID standardized at 13.56 MHz with a maximum communication range of about 4 centimeters. It is designed for two-way, short-range, secure communication.
Every contactless payment card you carry uses NFC. Every contactless mobile payment (Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay) uses NFC. Most modern hotel keycards use NFC. The chip layer of e-passports issued from 2007 onward uses NFC.
So when someone says NFC payment, they are also describing an RFID interaction. The terms are not contradictory. NFC is just the more precise name for the specific RFID flavor used in modern wallets.
What about the low-frequency badge band?
The low-frequency badge band is the other branch of RFID, used for older proximity badges, some hotel keycards in older properties, and some warehouse and access control systems. It is also RFID, but it is not NFC. NFC is specifically the 13.56 MHz standard.

Why product marketing gets this confused
NFC protection sounds modern. RFID protection sounds comprehensive. Some brands use one, some use the other, some use both on the same product page. Technically, all of them are correct if the product blocks 13.56 MHz signals, because NFC is RFID. The marketing variation is not lying. It is just imprecise.
What this means for choosing protection
If a product blocks 13.56 MHz, it blocks NFC. It blocks contactless cards, e-passports, mobile wallet hardware secure elements, and most modern hotel keycards. That is what matters for almost every traveler in 2026.
If a product also blocks the low-frequency badge band, it adds protection for older proximity badges. That is rarely relevant for travel use. It often adds bulk and weight without practical benefit.
